What the figures show

Receipts in 2025 were −17.0% compared with 2019, when international tourists spent THB 1.9 trillion. They fell to THB 98.1 billion in 2021 during the COVID-19 border closures. The average tourist stayed 9.89 days and spent THB 4,865 a day in 2025.

Accommodation is the largest spending category in every year since 2019. Shopping was second in 2019; from 2020 onwards food and drink has been second. The table below shows the full split for the latest year.

About this data

These are the Ministry of Tourism and Sports' estimates of spending by international tourist arrivals. The ministry combines arrivals with the average length of stay and average spending per person per day measured in visitor surveys, so the figures are estimates rather than counts of payments. US dollar values use the exchange rates the ministry states in each release.

They cover international tourists only. Spending by Thai residents travelling in Thailand is in the domestic tourism statistics, and revenue by province, which counts both Thai and foreign visitors, is on the tourism revenue by province page. The World Bank also publishes an international tourism receipts series based on balance of payments data, which uses a different method and is not shown here.

Methodology

Figures are the Ministry of Tourism and Sports' annual estimates of receipts from international tourist arrivals (the "Grand Total" row of each year's January–December tables). The ministry derives them from arrivals, average length of stay and average spending per person per day measured in visitor surveys, and splits spending into categories such as shopping, accommodation and food. US dollar values are converted by the ministry at the exchange rates it states in each release. These are estimates, not counts of transactions, and they cover international tourist arrivals only; spending by Thai residents is in the domestic tourism statistics.

2019 tables classify tourists by country of residence; later years by nationality. National totals are unaffected.

2020 and 2021 include spending by foreigners who arrived before the border closures and remained in Thailand, so their arrivals base differs slightly from the international arrivals series.

From 2024 the ministry no longer reports medical care as a separate spending category.
